Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced early parliamentary elections, which will take place on November 29. The next vote was scheduled for August 2027. The decision was made amid a new political crisis. The country is experiencing mass protests over housing affordability issues, and last week the government failed to pass a bill through parliament aimed at easing the housing crisis and protecting tenants. Mr. Sánchez's government has previously also faced a crisis due to the migration situation and corruption scandals. Follow Kommersant on MAX | on Telegram [in reply to: Mass protests over rising housing prices in Spain have increased pressure on the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The catalyst for the protests was the eviction of an 87-year-old pensioner from an apartment in Madrid, where she had lived for 70 years. After the change of ownership, the rent increased by 275%, to €2,650, which became unaffordable for the woman. Although landlords agreed to return the previous rent after the protests, protests against unaffordable housing continued. In an attempt to resolve the crisis, Sánchez introduced a housing bill to the Council of Ministers. It provides for the extension of measures to protect vulnerable categories of tenants from eviction until 2028, limits on rent increases, and provides tax breaks for tenants in areas with high rental costs. Getting such a document through parliament will not be easy: the minority government needs to secure the support of both left-wing allies and supporters of property rights. The housing crisis is aggravating Sánchez's position against the backdrop of the unresolved migrant crisis in Ceuta and a number of corruption scandals involving members of his family and close associates. Spanish Prime Minister Announces Early Parliamentary Elections for November 29
Pedro Sanchez said he had already informed the king and called an extraordinary cabinet meeting today to dissolve parliament and call elections.
Sanchez acknowledged the government's mistakes and said that further reforms require a much broader progressive majority in parliament. He named inequality, the state of public services and housing affordability among the unresolved problems.
We ourselves made mistakes and were unable to do everything we planned, — said the Prime Minister.
The decision was preceded by the failure of two government decrees on housing: on October 2, they were blocked in parliament by votes, in particular, from the Popular Party, Vox and the Catalan Junts. Mass protests took place across the country against the backdrop of the housing crisis. Add News.LIVE as a reliable news source on Google
