German Chancellor Merz reiterates his intention to remain in office after losing seats in state parliamentary elections.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz clings to power after his conservative party suffers its worst local election defeat in post-war Germany.
In the German state elections, the far-right AfD's largest party, the CDU, led by Chancellor Merz, lost all its seats, but Merz himself has announced he will remain in office.
The names of Merz's possible successors have been announced following his resignation.
After his party secured 4.9% and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 38.2%, Merz describes the defeat as a "disaster" and clings to the chancellorship. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described his party's loss in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elections as a "disaster," but affirmed his commitment to his position and continuing his reform agenda. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party considered the result a new success, while its leader, Tino Schröbel, stated that his party had ousted the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from the lead and "crushed" the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Calls for a change of course within the CDU intensified after the results, but Merz refused to resign and confirmed his continued leadership as chancellor and party leader. The AfD, which advocates for the deportation of foreigners, won the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elections with 38.2%, ahead of the SPD, which received 35.5%.

What would make this resolve YES?
This market will resolve according to the first listed individual who ceases to occupy their listed office.
An announcement of a resignation/removal, or a scheduled departure from office due to the outcome of an election, will not alone qualify.
Only permanent removal from office will qualify for resolution. Temporary removals, such as impeachment suspensions (e.g., Yoon Suk Yeol's recent impeachment), temporary invocation of the 25th Amendment, or any similar provisional transfers of power, will not count.
Additionally, if an individual continues in a caretaker or interim role (e.g., Gabriel Attal remaining as caretaker Prime Minister of France), they will not be considered to have ceased occupying the office for the purposes of this market.
If this criterion has not been met for any of the listed individuals by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “None before 2027”. No additional individuals will be added to this market after its creation.
The resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting.
