Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that he will not serve as a member of parliament after his party was defeated in elections, ending his 16-year rule. This ends, at least for now, a 36-year career. "I am needed now not in parliament, but in the reorganization of the patriotic movement," Orban said in a video he posted on social media on Saturday evening, even though on the eve of his defeat earlier this month he had promised to fight the opposition. After a meeting of senior leaders of the outgoing ruling Fidesz party, 62-year-old Orban said that the party's parliamentary faction would be led starting Monday by Gulias Gergely, his chief of staff. "The mandate I received as the leading candidate of the Fidesz-KDNP list is actually a Fidesz parliamentary mandate. For this reason, I decided to return it," Orban said. Although his nationalist Fidesz party fell from 135 seats to 52 in the election, Orban was re-elected as a member of parliament under its national list. The Tisa party, led by Péter Magyar, a former senior Fidesz official, won more than two-thirds of the 199 seats in parliament, paving the way for changes in Hungary's domestic policy and international relations, as well as changes to the constitution. About half of the seats in the Hungarian parliament are divided between parties based on their national support, while the other half represent individual constituencies. Orbán's fate as Fidesz leader will be decided at the party's congress in June, and he has promised to continue "shaping" the nationalist movement. Orbán has held a seat in parliament under one of two systems since 1990, leading Fidesz throughout. He has been Hungary's prime minister since 2010, becoming one of the continent's most prominent leaders due to his repeated clashes with the European Union over the rule of law, media freedom and judicial independence. However, voters have abandoned him in droves amid growing public discontent over allegations of corruption and fraud, as well as falling living standards. The incoming prime minister promised to reverse Orban-era changes to the education and healthcare systems, fight corruption, and restore the independence of the judiciary. The changes in Hungary's leadership also paved the way for the undoing of a €90 billion aid package for Ukraine, which Orban, who was close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, had blocked. Flight leaders have called for a swift transfer of power, and Hungary's new parliament is expected to hold its first session on May 9. Magyar is demanding that Hungary's president and senior judges – Orban loyalists – resign, or he will lead a move to remove them in parliament.
