The KREMLIN says President Trump and President Putin spoke by phone today. The White House has yet to confirm the call. • • Per @Reuters Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that the pair had discussed the outcome of U.S. peace negotiator's weekend visit to Moscow and Kyiv - something he said both leaders had rated "with a plus sign" - and said that Putin had told Trump what he believed the United States could do to help end the conflict. • • Putin had also given Trump his assessment of what the situation on the battlefield was and had made it clear that Russia had no hostile plans towards Europe, Ushakov said. • • "Donald Trump clearly emphasized the desirability of bringing the conflict to an end as soon as possible, which would immediately open up prospects – impressive and far-reaching ones at that – for the full restoration of relations between the U.S. and Russia," said Ushakov. • • "In his view, this would have a particular impact on trade and economic ties, promising enormous benefits for both countries. Donald Trump is keen to see a breakthrough achieved during his presidency. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin supported this approach." • • Ushakov - who said Putin and Trump had also agreed on the need to continue prisoner exchanges - said he was not able to get into more details about what had been discussed, but described the conversation as constructive and said the two leaders had agreed they would stay in touch and speak to each other by phone again if the needed arose.

The phone call between Putin and Trump is a logical continuation of the recent tour of Whitkoff and Kushner, Pavel Koshkin, a senior researcher at ISCRAN, told Vedomosti. According to him, the United States is intensifying the diplomatic process to demonstrate the seriousness of its intentions and is trying to restore the trust that was shaken over the past summer. “We shouldn’t devalue the current positive dynamics, although it doesn’t provide any guarantees. But for now, we can count on the political will for dialogue. Whether it exists in terms of concessions is another question,” Koshkin emphasized. He warned that the current attempt at a diplomatic settlement could very easily reach a dead end due to escalation from Europe or Ukraine. Commentary by Yuri Ushakov, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation, on the results of the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump (September 8, 2026) Yu.V. Ushakov: Another telephone conversation was held between Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and US President Donald Trump. In the mutually respectful and businesslike manner characteristic of the leaders, they exchanged views on the results of the trips of US Presidential Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv on September 5-6. The telephone conversation lasted exactly one hour and was constructive and very frank. You understand that it was confidential, so I will hardly be able to share many important details and nuances with you. The results of the visit of the aforementioned American representatives were assessed as positive, and work through this channel, as, incidentally, through some others, will be continued. The conversation focused on issues of the Ukrainian settlement, this is understandable. Donald Trump clearly conveyed the idea of the desirability of a speedy end to the conflict, which would immediately open up prospects, impressive and large-scale ones, for the full restoration of relations between the United States and Russia. In particular, in his opinion, this would affect trade and economic ties, which promise colossal benefits for both states. Donald Trump is interested in achieving a breakthrough during his presidency. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin supported this sentiment in the context of the possible construction of a constructive partnership between the two great powers, positively assessed the mediation efforts of the American side and Donald Trump personally in finding ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. An objective and thorough analysis was given of what is currently happening during the special military operation and, in general, how we see the prospects for advancement on the battlefield and the achievement of the goals and objectives set for the special military operation. Incidentally, it was outlined what the Americans could realistically do to bring military actions to a speedy end. Taking into account speculation about Russia’s alleged hostile intentions against European states, it was emphasized that we have no aggressive plans whatsoever against Europe. The myths being spread about the Russian threat serve as a cover for Europeans to increase their support for Ukraine and their own military spending. It is worth noting that during the telephone conversation it was agreed to continue working on resolving so-called humanitarian issues, including the exchange of detainees and convicted persons. Our President noted the efforts of First Lady Melania Trump to return both Russian and Ukrainian children to their families. Overall, I repeat once again, the conversation was on a positive note, the presidents agreed to stay in touch and will promptly call each other as needed. Thank you very much.
