The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday to South African judge Navi Pillay, in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and uphold international law. Pillay, 85, is a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which concluded in a 2025 report that Israel committed genocide in the Gaza Strip—a conclusion rejected by Israel. The Nobel Committee said Pillay's career spans from defending Nelson Mandela and others who fought against apartheid in South Africa to serving as a judge in some of the most high-profile cases before international courts. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor and will be presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who established the prizes in his will. 1895. Nafanethem Pillay was born in 1941 in South Africa and grew up under the apartheid regime, which imposed racial discrimination and restricted the rights of the country's Black majority. In 1967, she became the first Black woman to open a law office in Natal province, working to defend opponents of the apartheid regime, as well as cases related to the rights of detainees, torture, and abuses suffered by political activists. After the end of the regime, in 1995 she was appointed the first Black woman to serve as a judge on the South African Supreme Court, a step that paved the way for her transition to international judicial institutions. In the same year, she was elected a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, established to investigate crimes committed during the 1994 genocide, and served as its president from 1999 and 2003. In 2003, Pillay was elected a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, serving until 2012. She participated in the court's judicial work, including the Appeals Chamber. On 1 September 2008, she began her duties as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, appointed by a resolution of the General Assembly. She served until August 2014, advocating for the application of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, and for holding those responsible for violations accountable. Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised her work in June 2014, noting her role in defending justice and equality and keeping human rights at the heart of the work of the international organization. In July 2021, Pillay was appointed Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Including East Jerusalem and Israel, along with Mellon Kothari and Chris Sidoti. With the war on Gaza, the Commission's role in investigating violations of international humanitarian law and human rights became prominent. Its report, issued in September 2015, concluded that Israel had committed genocide in the Gaza Strip, a conclusion rejected by Israel. Her Nobel Peace Prize comes after a career spanning law, national courts, international criminal tribunals, and UN work, at a time when holding those responsible for international crimes accountable and upholding international law remain among the most significant challenges facing international institutions.

Live: Jørgen Watne Frydnes, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, was asked at the event on Friday whether awarding the prize to Pillay was also a way to give the honor to the International Criminal Court, where she had served as a judge. “This is a message that international law and its institutions are the cornerstone of a more peaceful world,” Frydnes said. “So of course we hope that this prize also will strengthen the institutions, the individuals, not only Navi Pillay, but particularly her.”
Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights wins Nobel Peace Prize Nawantham Pillay, a South African lawyer, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and former judge of the International Criminal Court and the Supreme Court of South Africa, has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Pillay headed the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories until November 2025; the commission was established in 2021. The United States and European countries have repeatedly expressed their opposition to the establishment of this commission, and one of their main criticisms is the lack of an official end date for the institution's activities. In response to these criticisms, Pillay said: "The Israeli occupation also has no end date, but you usually support that occupation." In September 2025, the commission announced in a report that Israel committed genocide during the Gaza war. In this report, Israel's actions against the people of Gaza were examined based on the criteria set out in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. @YjcNewsChannel
