NEW: The DOJ's investigation into Powell and the Fed may be over, but the central bank will be dealing with the aftershocks for quite some time. • • What will be hard to recoup is confidence in the Fed’s ability to operate independently from a White House that has shown little restraint in its efforts to pressure it into slashing rates. • • Crucially, Tillis has not yet spoken today about whether he will now allow Warsh's confirmation to proceed. Powell, meanwhile, has reason to be skeptical that the legal threats against him and the institution are well and truly over, keeping alive the prospects that he stays on as a governor • • @nytimes @TonyRomm

Senator Tim Scott, Republican of South Carolina and chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, asked the inspector general for the Fed to brief his panel on its investigation into the central bank and its ongoing renovations at its headquarters. That matter was the subject of the federal inquiry into Jerome Powell, the Fed chair, which federal prosecutors have now dropped. Scott asked for the briefing within the next 90 days. “As I’ve said from the beginning, the American people deserve answers about the unacceptable cost overruns at the Federal Reserve,” Scott said in a statement. “These serious concerns warrant scrutiny, and I’m pleased this matter is continuing to receive it.” Left unaddressed was the fate of Kevin Warsh, whose nomination to lead the Fed has been held up because of the inquiry. The committee has not yet announced a date to vote on Warsh’s nomination.

When Jeannine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, announced an end to the investigation into the Fed chair Jerome Powell, she noted that the inspector general for the Fed “has been asked to scrutinize” cost overruns in a renovation of the central bank headquarters. In a statement later Friday, the watchdog pointed to the fact that it had announced such an inquiry last July. “In July of last year, the OIG announced that it was conducting an evaluation of the Board’s building renovation project,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “This assessment includes our independent analysis of the project’s substantial cost increases and overruns. We are actively working to complete our review, and look forward to making the results available to the public and Congress upon completion.”

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said on Wednesday that she would forge ahead with an investigation into Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the Fed. At a news conference, Pirro said she would appeal a recent court decision that had blocked prosecutors from subpoenaing Powell, as they continue to probe cost overruns in a renovation of the Fed’s headquarters. The judge in that case quashed the subpoenas after finding they were politically motivated. “This investigation continues,” she said. “I am in the legal lane. There are others who are in the political lane. I don’t intersect those two lanes. I’m going forward.” The move threatened to snarl the confirmation of Kevin Warsh, whom President Trump has nominated to replace Powell as chair of the nation’s central bank. At least one Republican, Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, has said he will not advance any nominee for the Fed while the investigation into Powell is open.

How did this market resolve?

Federal prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell over his congressional testimony in June 2025 about the renovation of the Central Bank’s headquarters (See: https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/11/business/federal-prosecutors-criminal-investigation-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell). This market will resolve to “Yes” if this criminal investigation into Jerome Powell is dropped by the listed date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. The investigation will be considered to be dropped if it is definitively announced by the DoJ, Donald Trump, or other relevant members of the Trump Administration that the investigation is or will be ended without proceeding to any charges or indictment, or if the investigation is otherwise confirmed to have ended without charges by a broad consensus of credible reporting. Official statements from Donald Trump or other Trump Administration officials will only suffice to resolve this market to “Yes” if they definitively indicate that the investigation is or will be ended without proceeding to any charges or indictment. Suggestions, informal statements, statements that there will be no charges for now, or other statements that do not meet this standard will not alone qualify. If the United States federal government formally charges or announces a criminal indictment of Jerome Powell as a result of this investigation, within this market’s timeframe, this market will immediately resolve to “No”. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the United States Federal Government; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
