After his party secured 4.9% and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 38.2%, Merz describes the defeat as a "disaster" and clings to the chancellorship. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described his party's loss in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elections as a "disaster," but affirmed his commitment to his position and continuing his reform agenda. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party considered the result a new success, while its leader, Tino Schröbel, stated that his party had ousted the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from the lead and "crushed" the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Calls for a change of course within the CDU intensified after the results, but Merz refused to resign and confirmed his continued leadership as chancellor and party leader. The AfD, which advocates for the deportation of foreigners, won the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elections with 38.2%, ahead of the SPD, which received 35.5%.

How Western media assessed Merz's failure in the elections Reuters: "The results of Sunday's elections may not be a decisive blow for Merz, but his low approval ratings, unpopular reforms and the victory of the Alternative for Germany in the previous elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt have put his future into question."
Sky News: "If the results are confirmed after the official announcement, it will be the CDU's lowest result in any state since World War II and below the 5 percent threshold needed for a party to enter the state parliament."
CNN:
"The results worsen Merz's already difficult situation. Some believe there is only one possible outcome in this situation - a 'change of chancellor'."

The competitiveness of the German economy is largely declining due to the fact that Germany has stopped buying cheap Russian gas, said Dmitry Peskov. He noted that Germany has begun to purchase gas “sometimes several times more expensive” on the spot market than gas from other countries, primarily the United States. “Naturally, Germans, at least some Germans, are looking for an alternative to the current government in order to improve their situation. This is a natural process,” the Kremlin spokesman said, commenting on the election results in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) failed to overcome the 5% barrier in the local parliament elections following the voting results. Germans want Friedrich Merz to go to Moscow for talks and break the "spiral of escalation and arms buildup," said AfD co-chairman Tino Chrupalla. According to him, voters want to see a different policy in the country, including in the area of peace and diplomacy, so that the authorities can focus on Germany's internal problems. Party co-chair Alice Weidel, in turn, said that AfD intends to maintain dialogue with both the United States and Russia. "It is important for us to open a channel of communication with the Russian side together with the Americans. At the same time, both sides came to the conclusion that the only reliable partner in Germany can only be the Alternative for Germany," Weidel said. The day before, the Alternative for Germany won the elections to the parliament of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, gaining 38.2% of the vote. CDU Chancellor Friedrich Merz's party received 4.9% and, for the first time in its history, failed to enter parliament. On September 6, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 44.5% in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliamentary elections, compared to the CDU's 17.2%. How did this market resolve?
Parliamentary elections to elect the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scheduled to take place on September 20, 2026.
This market will resolve according to the margin of victory between the top two parties in the specified election.
The “margin of victory” is defined as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid second votes (Zweitstimme) received by the first-place and second-place parties. Percentages will be determined by dividing the total number of valid second votes each of the top two parties receives by the total number of valid second votes cast in the election.
Valid vote percentages will be counted only where the State Returning Officer of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Landeswahlleiter Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) attributes them to the named party. Vote percentages attributed to other parties or electoral designations will not count, regardless of electoral cooperation, endorsements, coalition agreements, or subsequent parliamentary-group arrangements.
If the reported value falls exactly between two brackets, then this market will resolve to the higher margin bracket.
If a party other than AfD or SPD receives the most valid second votes, this market will resolve to "Another party wins".
If two or more parties tie for the most valid second votes, this market will resolve to the lowest margin bracket for the party whose listed abbreviation comes first in alphabetical order.
If the results of this election are not definitively known by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "Another party wins".
This market will resolve based on the results of this election as indicated by a consensus of credible reporting. If there is ambiguity, this market will resolve based solely on the official results as published on the official Mecklenburg-Vorpommern elections page of the Landesamt für innere Verwaltung (www.laiv-mv.de/Wahlen/Landtagswahlen/2026/).
