After his party secured 4.9% and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 38.2%, Merz describes the defeat as a "disaster" and clings to the chancellorship. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described his party's loss in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elections as a "disaster," but affirmed his commitment to his position and continuing his reform agenda. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party considered the result a new success, while its leader, Tino Schröbel, stated that his party had ousted the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from the lead and "crushed" the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Calls for a change of course within the CDU intensified after the results, but Merz refused to resign and confirmed his continued leadership as chancellor and party leader. "Merz is cornered": the EU fears that the growing popularity of the AfD will force Germany to reduce payments to the EU budget, writes Euractiv. According to the portal, the weakening position of the chancellor and the strengthening of the right are causing European capitals to fear that Berlin will reconsider the size of its contributions. "Now he is cornered by the rise of the far right," a European diplomat told the publication. The Economist also notes that after the defeat of the Christian Democratic Union, Merz's position has become "more precarious than ever." The publication calls the CDU's result the worst in its history and points out that the chancellor failed the political test set before him by his own party. Following the CDU's defeat in the state elections, its leadership held a meeting without the participation of its chairman, Friedrich Merz, DPA reports. On September 20, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) won the elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 38.2% of the vote, significantly ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU. The party received 4.9% and, for the first time in its history, failed to enter the state parliament. On September 6, the AfD also gained 44.5% in the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, compared to 17.2% for the CDU. Merz has acknowledged the party's defeat, and his fellow party members are increasingly demanding his resignation. Learn more about the CDU's failure and Merz's future in Izvestia's analysis. The competitiveness of the German economy is largely declining due to the fact that Germany has stopped buying cheap Russian gas, said Dmitry Peskov. What is this event about?

Parliamentary elections to elect the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scheduled to take place on September 20, 2026. This market will resolve according to the margin of victory between the top two parties in the specified election. The “margin of victory” is defined as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid second votes (Zweitstimme) received by the first-place and second-place parties. Percentages will be determined by dividing the total number of valid second votes each of the top two parties receives by the total number of valid second votes cast in the election. Valid vote percentages will be counted only where the State Returning Officer of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Landeswahlleiter Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) attributes them to the named party. Vote percentages attributed to other parties or electoral designations will not count, regardless of electoral cooperation, endorsements, coalition agreements, or subsequent parliamentary-group arrangements. If the reported value falls exactly between two brackets, then this market will resolve to the higher margin bracket. If a party other than AfD or SPD receives the most valid second votes, this market will resolve to "Another party wins". If two or more parties tie for the most valid second votes, this market will resolve to the lowest margin bracket for the party whose listed abbreviation comes first in alphabetical order. If the results of this election are not definitively known by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "Another party wins". This market will resolve based on the results of this election as indicated by a consensus of credible reporting. If there is ambiguity, this market will resolve based solely on the official results as published on the official Mecklenburg-Vorpommern elections page of the Landesamt für innere Verwaltung (www.laiv-mv.de/Wahlen/Landtagswahlen/2026/).
