Most Republicans absolutely hate the proposed bailout of Spirit • Thune: "A really bad idea. I don’t think you want the government owning airlines" • Cruz: "A terrible idea; corporate bailouts are a mistake" • Tillis: “It’s horseshit" • Hawley: “not my favorite thing" • Murkowski: “Why Spirit above everybody else?" • Kennedy: “Lutnick is giving the president incredibly bad advice" • Nehls: "next thing you know, we’ll be bailing out football teams. I’m not a big fan" • Massie: “rewarding failure" • Moran: “We don’t want to lose a carrier. But it just philosophically troubles me about this endeavor to put money into a private corporation" • • A White House official said the criticism is “premature” since “the Trump administration has not released any concrete plan on potential federal assistance for Spirit Airlines.”

Five US airlines ask Trump for $2.5 billion in compensation The unprecedented increase in jet fuel prices in the United States to more than $1.4 per gallon has caused heavy losses for American airlines. The losses have prompted a coalition of airlines called Value Airlines to request $2.5 billion in emergency aid from the government. The alliance includes five low-cost airlines: Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Avalo Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Sun Country Airlines. The coalition, which has seen jet fuel prices increase by about 100 percent since February of this year, said in a statement that the $2.5 billion request is a necessary measure to keep tickets affordable during this period of instability. In response to this request, a White House spokesperson said that the administration is aware of this action but declined to comment definitively on the possibility of this request being implemented. Spirit Airlines could be used to transport troops, military cargo if Trump admin takes over bankrupt carrier: report
YESsentdefender99%match58¢-100%
The Trump Administration is considering using the Defense Production Act as part of a strategy to save the beleaguered Spirit Airlines, who has declared bankruptcy for the second time in two years as the Iran War drives up jet fuel costs for all domestic and international airlines, according to U.S. officials familiar with the discussions who spoke to CBS News. • • Under the bailout plan being discussed, the government would lend Spirit $500 million at a reasonable rate interest, and become the top debtor in the bankruptcy pecking order. The loan would be protected by Spirit assets that would exceed the government's costs, while providing taxpayers with a warrant - the right to own 90% of the company after it emerges from bankruptcy, then likely being sold to another carrier, potentially American or Delta.

What is this event about?

This market will resolve to “Yes” if the U.S. federal government takes a stake in Spirit Airlines, or any of its parent or subsidiary companies, by May 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Takes a stake refers to the U.S. federal government acquiring direct equity ownership, voting shares, convertible rights treated as equity, or equivalent ownership interests in the listed company or of a legal vehicle that primarily owns the listed company. Stakes acquired through independent entities entirely controlled or owned by the U.S. federal government (e.g. a sovereign wealth fund, state-owned enterprise, etc.) will count. Non-equity financial instruments or stakes acquired by private persons or entities not owned or controlled by the US federal government will not count; acquisitions by states, pensions, index or mutual funds, or consortia will not qualify. An official US federal government announcement of a completed qualifying acquisition, or of a binding agreement to complete a qualifying acquisition, within this market’s timeframe will be sufficient to resolve this market to “Yes”. Speculation, suggestions, plans, or other announcements which do not announce a completed acquisition or a binding acquisition agreement, however, will not count. The resolution source for this market will be official information from the US federal government and a consensus of credible reporting.
