The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to its lowest level in 44 years, reaching 283.8 million barrels, Reuters reports, citing the Energy Department. This figure is the lowest since October 1982. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the minimum amount of oil required for safe operation is about 70 million barrels. The sharp decline in reserves occurred due to the release of oil to stabilize the market. In March, Trump ordered the release of 172 million barrels after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to a 1982 level. As of the week ending September 25, it stood at 283.8 million barrels, according to the US Department of Energy. Global oil reserves have been declining since early March. Then, the US President ordered the release of 172 million barrels of oil from the reserves as part of an agreement with the International Energy Agency. This was due to a sharp rise in commodity prices and supply disruptions due to the conflict in the Middle East. Follow Kommersant on MAX | on Telegram

The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to its lowest level since 1982, Reuters reports. According to the country's Energy Department, the reserves fell to 283.8 million barrels in the week ending September 25. The last time the strategic reserve was lower was on October 22, 1982, when it was 283.393 million barrels. As a reminder, on September 28, US President Donald Trump suggested a ban on the export of American diesel fuel. On September 22, Reuters wrote that the dollar had risen as volatile oil prices had worsened the inflation picture. In July 2026, it became known that a quarter of all oil reserves were unavailable for extraction. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, this was due to technical equipment failures. On September 15, the WSJ published an article acknowledging that the global fuel crisis had already begun, and that global energy reserves were continuing to rapidly decline, while the capacity to use strategic oil reserves was practically exhausted. Trump is reducing US oil reserves While oil prices are trading at $108, the US Department of Energy announced minutes ago that it has released another 800,000 barrels from its strategic reserves, bringing the level of these reserves to 283.6 million barrels. The US had created strategic oil reserves to deal with oil shocks, but after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump has been withdrawing from these reserves for 28 weeks to lower oil prices. Despite these withdrawals, US reserves have reached their lowest level in 44 years and are close to the operational bottom of 250 million barrels; at the same time, the price of diesel has hit a record high and gasoline has reached $4.47. @Farsna - Link

US Strategic Oil Stockpiles Decline Again Data from the US Department of Energy shows that the country's strategic oil stocks fell to 285 million barrels last week, the lowest level since November 1982. The decline in US stocks is due to the country's agreement with members of the International Energy Agency to withdraw 172 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves. Members of the International Energy Agency agreed in March to withdraw an unprecedented 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves in order to counter the increase in global crude prices after the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran. The US share in the agreement was set at 172 million barrels. The Trump administration offered 172 million barrels of oil from the strategic reserves in the form of loans to applicant companies, which must return the withdrawn volume plus 40 million barrels as interest to the government./ Reuters @Shananewsroom
