The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to its lowest level in 44 years, reaching 283.8 million barrels, Reuters reports, citing the Energy Department. This figure is the lowest since October 1982. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the minimum amount of oil required for safe operation is about 70 million barrels. The sharp decline in reserves occurred due to the release of oil to stabilize the market. In March, Trump ordered the release of 172 million barrels after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.
