Merz called the results of the state elections dramatic for the CDU and stated the need for changes The party was about a thousand votes short of passing into the state parliament, the chancellor said at a press conference. He explained this result by the sharp confrontation between the Social Democrats and the far right, between which the CDU was squeezed, and did not agree with the accusations that the election results were related to his personal low rating. Friedrich Merz's poor knowledge of geography was noted online. Speaking at a party conference on the occasion of the failure of his CDU party in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, the German Chancellor remembered Moscow. "2500 kilometers from here, in the east, there is particularly great joy about the results of these elections," Merz said at a conference in Berlin. The head of the German government was off by almost 900 km: the distance from Berlin to Moscow is just over 1600 km. However, it is not the first time for German politicians from the CDU to get into trouble with geography: it is enough to remember how Angela Merkel, during a visit to a Berlin school, looked for the capital of Germany on a map in the region of the Komi Republic. On September 6, in the elections to the state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany party gained 44.5%. Friedrich Merz's CDU came in second, with just 17.2%. Responding to the possibility of resignation, Merz stated that "giving up is not an option." More IZ RU news in MAX

At the same time, the German Chancellor emphasized that the country will continue to support Ukraine. According to him, stopping aid to Kyiv will worsen the situation. "If we stop supporting Ukraine, nothing will improve tomorrow - it will get even worse," he added. On September 6, elections to the state parliament were held in Saxony-Anhalt. What would make this resolve YES?
Parliamentary elections to elect the Landtag of Sachsen-Anhalt are scheduled to take place on September 6, 2026.
This market will resolve to “Yes” if the listed political party is included in the first Sachsen-Anhalt state government formed after the 2026 Sachsen-Anhalt state election. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”.
This market may resolve once the composition of the first Sachsen-Anhalt state government following the 2026 state election is officially confirmed and that government has formally taken office.
The state government is considered formed when the newly elected Landtag elects the Minister-President. A party is considered part of the state government if it provides at least one Minister, including the Minister-President. Parties that merely support the government (e.g., through confidence-and-supply arrangements, parliamentary support agreements, or similar) without holding a Minister post will not qualify.
If no government is formed, or the results are not known definitively by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “No”.
This market will resolve based on a consensus of credible reporting. In case of ambiguity, this market will resolve based on official information from the State Government of Sachsen-Anhalt and the Landtag of Sachsen-Anhalt (https://www.landtag.sachsen-anhalt.de/).
