Following its historic victory in Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party leads the state parliament but without an absolute majority, and the refusal of other parties to form a coalition with it complicates its path to government.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has acknowledged the defeat of his CDU party in the elections in Saxony-Anhalt. "The CDU suffered a 'dramatic defeat' in the elections, which marked a 'profound turning point for the party,'" the Bild newspaper reported him as saying. Merz also ruled out cooperation with the victorious Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. According to him, the German authorities cannot continue to adhere to the existing agenda after this. On September 6, elections to the state parliament were held in Saxony-Anhalt. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won, gaining 44.5%. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union came in second, gaining only 17.2%. More news from IZ RU in MAX

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in his first comment on the far-right party's big victory in Saxony-Anhalt: Germany is facing a tectonic shift in the party structure, this shift is shaking the CDU (the chancellor's conservative right-wing party) to its core, we cannot simply continue as usual. There can be no cooperation with the AfD party
Saxony-Anhalt election: AfD wins state election clearly – but misses out on an absolute majority
The right-wing Alternative for Germany party won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8 percent of the vote and 39 seats in the 83-seat parliament, but is three seats short of an outright majority, the Associated Press reported. The party won more than double the number of votes it received in the election five years ago. Ulrich Sigmund, the party's candidate for state governor, said the AfD had "made history" and given voters a clear mandate to govern. The Christian Democratic Union, led by Chancellor Friedrich Mertz, lost almost half of its support with 17.2 percent of the vote and 15 seats. The party has led the state government for the past 24 years. Mainstream parties have rejected cooperation with the AfD, and the differences between them have made it difficult to form a stable government. If the AfD can form a government, it will lead a German state for the first time in its history.
Live: Saxony-Anhalt is one of 16 states in Germany, each of which elects its own legislature. The lawmakers in that legislature elect a state government that, like in the United States, oversees certain services while leaving national policy to the federal government. In Sunday’s election, the far-right AfD party is expected to win more seats than any other party — but it isn’t clear if it will win the outright majority it needs to take power without forming a coalition with other parties. Other conservative, centrist and leftist parties have vowed that they won’t join a coalition government that includes the AfD.

What would make this resolve YES?
Parliamentary elections to elect the Landtag of Sachsen-Anhalt are scheduled to take place on September 6, 2026.
This market will resolve to “Yes” if the listed political party is included in the first Sachsen-Anhalt state government formed after the 2026 Sachsen-Anhalt state election. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”.
This market may resolve once the composition of the first Sachsen-Anhalt state government following the 2026 state election is officially confirmed and that government has formally taken office.
The state government is considered formed when the newly elected Landtag elects the Minister-President. A party is considered part of the state government if it provides at least one Minister, including the Minister-President. Parties that merely support the government (e.g., through confidence-and-supply arrangements, parliamentary support agreements, or similar) without holding a Minister post will not qualify.
If no government is formed, or the results are not known definitively by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “No”.
This market will resolve based on a consensus of credible reporting. In case of ambiguity, this market will resolve based on official information from the State Government of Sachsen-Anhalt and the Landtag of Sachsen-Anhalt (https://www.landtag.sachsen-anhalt.de/).
