CHILD KILLER OR DEPRESSED MOTHER? I couldn't leave today's column unsaid about the most talked-about topic in America. Not Hormuz, not a renewed war with Iran, and certainly not oil prices… The issue is a trial that has been ongoing for weeks and concluded recently. A trial that has divided society, whose details are truly heartbreaking, upsetting, and sickening. * As I said… Leave aside politics, war, and price increases. Today, there is only one thing that millions of people in the US are glued to their screens, crying, getting angry, arguing, and fighting each other over: A mother, or in other words, a suspected killer, taking the lives of her three young children. The name that has divided the country is Lindsay Clancy. She is 36 years old. She is a former maternity nurse from Massachusetts. The incident occurred in January 2023. One evening, Lindsay asked her husband, Patrick, to get medicine for the children from the pharmacy and dinner from a nearby restaurant. According to the indictment, at that very moment, Lindsay accessed a map on her phone to calculate the distance to the restaurant and how long it would take her husband to get there and back. A 45-minute time window began as soon as her husband left the house. * Lindsay took her 5-year-old daughter Cora, 3-year-old son Dawson, and 8-month-old baby Callan down to the basement. She murdered them all by strangling them with exercise bands. One of the children even tried to escape, but "mother" caught him too. Afterwards, she went upstairs and jumped from the second-floor window. Patrick, who returned home with the medicine and dinner, panicked when he saw bloodstains in the rooms. He goes outside and finds his wife severely injured in the garden. "Where are the children?" he shouts, and Lindsay says, "They're in the basement." Patrick runs to the basement… And then, as a father, I'm left with that image that makes my hands and feet tremble as I write it. * Now… This event happened in January 2023. After investigations, psychiatric reports, and forensic examinations, the trial began in July 2026, exactly three and a half years later. The prosecution said… This was a planned, deliberate, heinous murder. The defense said… Severe postpartum psychosis… Those dark voices echoing in her mind… And exactly 13 different strong psychiatric medications. According to them, what happened in that basement that day wasn't an act of cruelty; It was the tragedy of a mother whose mind was locked by medication. * After a 7-week court process, 12 jurors were locked in a room to deliberate. The rule is: all 12 jurors must agree. But in the end, 11 jurors were on one side, and 1 on the other. Let me be clear… I thought that one juror insisted on "not guilty." It turned out that while 11 jurors voted for the defense's argument of "not guilty because of lack of criminal responsibility," the remaining juror insisted on "guilty." And finally, the judge delivered his verdict: Mistrial. So? Cancellation due to disagreement. So what happens now? Will Lindsay be set free? No. The prosecution has the right to open a new case from scratch. Lindsay will remain in the hospital during that process. * Now I ask you… Was what happened in that basement the tragedy of a victimized mother whose mind was held captive by heavy medication and illness, hearing voices from nowhere? Or was it the plan of a killer who coldly eliminated three defenseless angels? And one last question… If we were to examine the mental health of every murderer, would it be possible to convict them of murder? If the “great” American judiciary and society cannot answer these questions… Who will protect these angels?

Live: With the jury's failure to decide whether Lindsay Clancy is criminally responsible for killing her three children, the charges against her remain in force. There could be some kind of plea agreement, or, failing that, the state could try her again. The judge set a status hearing in the case for Sept. 29.

NEW: Prosecutors argue they've proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Lindsay Clancy knew her actions when she killed her children were wrong and could control them, pointing to evidence of planning, her behavior before the killings, and the absence of documented signs of psychosis. • • They also challenge her claim that she heard a male voice, citing inconsistencies in her account and expert testimony about how unusual such an isolated hallucination would be. • • Jurors must now determine whether Clancy was legally responsible for her actions. | @BryanLlenas

What would make this resolve YES?

Lindsay Clancy has been charged by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts with three counts of murder for the death of her three children. You can read more about that here: https://media.wbur.org/wp/2023/09/clancy-indictment.pdf. This market will resolve to "Yes" if Lindsay Clancy is convicted of at least one murder charge in the ongoing Commonwealth v. Lindsay Clancy case by either the specified date, 11:59 PM ET or, in the event of a mistrial, by the end of any retrial that begins before that date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". If this case ends due to a dismissal, or results in any situation in which no judgment is rendered by the court, or results in a verdict of Not Guilty for all murder charges (including by reason of lack of criminal responsibility due to mental illness), this market will resolve to "No". A plea agreement will qualify to resolve this market "Yes" only if it results in a judgment of conviction for murder. If all murder charges against Clancy are dropped, or otherwise changed such that they are no longer considered murder, this market will immediately resolve to "No". This market will resolve according to the initial judgment rendered in this case. Any appeals will have no bearing on the resolution of this market. The primary resolution source will be an official judgment delivered by the ruling court; however, other credible reporting may be used.
