Not long to go: the majority of Germans do not believe that Friedrich Merz will remain chancellor of Germany until the 2029 elections, Bild reports, citing a YouGov poll. Merz's political authority is rapidly eroding: after returning from a three-week vacation, the head of government faced harsh criticism for poor communication during the crisis and was booed during a trip to a region of the country affected by forest fires. According to the poll, 36% of respondents expect Merz to remain in office until the end of this year, but will be removed before the 2029 elections. Another 18% of people predict his early resignation as early as 2026. Only 29% believe that the chancellor will be able to serve out his entire term. The remaining 17% are still undecided. Merz's position has also been seriously undermined within his own CDU/CSU bloc due to unsuccessful personnel changes in the government. As a result, the current chancellor is catastrophically behind his fellow party members in his personal ratings: only 9% of Germans consider him the best candidate. More IZ RU news in MAX
