Windward is tracking 14 Saudi-flagged vessels rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope instead of transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as Houthi attacks on Saudi-linked shipping in the Red Sea continue. • • Since July 20, the diversions have added an estimated 140-195 extra vessel-days and $13-14M in voyage cost across the fleet, each transit running 10-14 days and roughly $0.9-1M longer than the direct route. • • The willingness to absorb this scale of delay and cost reflects how seriously Saudi Arabia is taking the Houthi threat, rather than a routine commercial routing choice. Given its outsized share of global shipping and energy trade, that risk aversion is a signal worth watching beyond the Saudi fleet for what it implies about trade flows through the Red Sea corridor. • • Live Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb tracking:

Following the Houthi takeover of Perim Island and Yemen's southern Red Sea coast, AIS-transmitting traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has picked up. Satellite imagery from 08:01 UTC on September 14 confirms that no dark vessels were detected transiting at the time. • • Although seemingly counterintuitive, broadcasting AIS is how vessels signal they're not party to the conflict, claiming the free passage that still stands for non-Saudi vessels.

Due to escalating conflicts and security risks on Yemen's western coast, commercial ship traffic through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait has fallen to critical levels. Before the crisis, an average of 70-75 ships passed through the strait daily; in the last 3 days, only 79 commercial ships have passed through. According to maritime tracking systems, 25 ships passed through the strait on September 8th, 28 on September 9th, and 26 on September 10th. News that the Houthis have taken control of the strategic Zukur Island and seized Mayyun Island in Bab al-Mandeb has increased tensions in the region. It is stated that the pressure on the strait, which is one of the critical transit points of the trade and energy line extending from Asia to Europe via the Suez Canal, could trigger a new rise in global oil prices.
