Some days as Minister of Defense I will never forget Today the agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the USA was signed. Of course, it makes me think back to the serious days during the crisis. It was probably the period in my time as Minister of Defense when I slept the least. New statements from the USA created uncertainty again and again about what would happen. It was a chaotic and deeply serious time. First and foremost for the people of Greenland, but also for the entire Kingdom. Our red line was clear: We would not give up sovereignty over parts of the Kingdom. At the same time, we insisted that we should maintain cooperation with the USA. Even when it was difficult. Our security depended on finding a way forward together with the Americans and our other allies. I particularly remember a very important meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels in January 2026. My Greenlandic colleague Vivian Motzfeldt and I made the Kingdom's red lines clear. Before Rutte was to meet with Trump, we needed the NATO Secretary General to understand our position and the need for NATO to take greater responsibility for security in the Arctic. The entire Kingdom of Denmark and a number of other countries joined forces to increase military training activity in Greenland, and our Danish soldiers delivered an invaluable effort under demanding conditions. With today's agreement, we have hopefully come a long way. I am very pleased that we have reached this point. Thank you to our Greenlandic colleagues, the Danish government, our allies and all those who took responsibility in a difficult time.
The US, Denmark and Greenland have signed an "unprecedented" agreement to increase the US military presence on the Arctic island. The ceremony, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, was attended by US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen. The agreement ensures that no "adversary" will be able to gain control or significant influence in Greenland. The US will immediately begin increasing its military presence, including the construction of two new bases, while the island itself remains under Danish control. It is not known how much this agreement differs from the existing 1951 pact between the US and Denmark, which allowed for a large American military presence in Greenland.
