The Estonian Parliament has elected Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the new president. She secured the necessary majority in the first round of voting, ERR reports. 71 of the 78 MPs who participated in the vote voted for Madise. After the results were announced, Madise thanked the MPs for their support and noted that she would do "everything possible to justify this trust." Madise will be the seventh president of Estonia and the second woman to hold this position. She will take office on October 12 after taking the oath of office in front of Parliament. In Estonia, the president is elected by Parliament, not by direct vote of the citizens. To win, a candidate must receive at least two-thirds of the votes of deputies—68 out of 101. If parliament fails to choose the head of state, the election goes to the Electoral College, which includes deputies and representatives of local governments. If no such President takes office by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Estonia; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
