Here are the most prominent results of the first round of the Brazilian presidential elections and the market reactions to them: Senator Flavio Bolsonaro surprisingly topped the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the first round, paving the way for a runoff election to be held on October 25. Bolsonaro received about 47% of the votes, compared to about 45% for the leftist Lula. Bolsonaro's allies also performed strongly in parliamentary and local elections across Brazil, reinforcing signs of a conservative sweep in Latin America's largest economy. Brazilian assets surged as investors saw the first-round result as increasing the likelihood of the adoption of policies they expect to include fiscal measures such as cuts in government spending, according to Bloomberg. The Ibovespa stock index rose as much as 9.1%, its biggest jump since March 2020, while the Brazilian real climbed nearly 5%, and the US-listed iShares MSCI Brazil fund jumped 12%. Several investors and analysts, including JPMorgan, said they see room for this to continue. The Rise In the coming days, investors will be watching the potential names of Flavio Bolsonaro's economic team members, along with the alliances he seeks to build in preparation for the runoff election.
