BoE Hold Masks A Sharper Bias Towards Tightening • • The Bank of England held the Bank Rate at 3.75% in a 6–3 vote, as expected, but shifted closer to further tightening. Energy prices have risen sharply since July, lifting the Bank’s early-2027 inflation forecast above 4%, while stronger activity suggests economic slack may no longer be increasing. • • Although the MPC still sees little evidence of second-round effects in wages and prices, it now judges those risks to have grown and the inflation outlook to be more clearly tilted to the upside. Notably, several members who voted to hold said the case for raising rates is building if the conflict and energy shock persist. • • The decision should reinforce higher-for-longer expectations and leave a near-term hike firmly in play, supporting sterling and pressuring short-dated gilts. Separately, the Bank made quantitative tightening more predictable, committing to unwind its monetary-policy gilt portfolio by 2034 while maintaining £20 bn of annual sales.
