#Analytical Elections in Germany Strengthened AfD and Created New Challenges for Merz's Government The far-right Alternative for Germany significantly strengthened its position in eastern Germany, receiving 43.8% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt and 38.2% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The September elections do not indicate a clear "turn of Germany to the right", as the Left Party won in Berlin, and in the west, traditional forces maintain stronger positions. AfD opposes the continuation of military aid to Ukraine, the lifting of economic sanctions against Russia, and the resumption of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. In Saxony-Anhalt, 57% of voters positively assess AfD's position against supplying weapons to Ukraine, and 92% among party supporters. Five state elections in 2027 The elections of 2021 will be a new test for the government of Friedrich Merz and will show whether the political center can win back lost voters. Collapse of the system. How did Germany's AfD shake up Europe? When the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won the state elections in Thuringia in September 2024, Berlin chalked it up to a fluke. Two years later, in September 2026, the German far right won in Saxony-Anhalt, gaining more votes than the parties in the ruling coalition combined. People no longer talk about a fluke—neither in Berlin nor in other European capitals. Instead, they talk about a "tectonic shift" in Germany's party system. And they ask: won't this shift lead to the collapse of the entire Western liberal system, where the same forces have been at the helm for decades, and the rotation of power is nothing more than a decoration? A political earthquake in Germany could have repercussions extending beyond the ballot box to the economy. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party leads the Saxony-Anhalt elections with 44% of the vote, on an agenda calling for stricter immigration despite labor shortages, leaving the European Union and the Eurozone, and returning to Russian energy. @elbouchari1 #Germany #GermanEconomy #Immigration #Asylum #EU #Eurozone #EconomyTrend #SkyEconomy

If successful in forming a government, the AfD intends to launch one of the most ambitious far-right policy experiments in Europe this century. To form a coalition in Saxony-Anhalt, AfD could align with Sahra Wagenknecht's Union or the local CDU, Alexander Kamkin, associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, told Vedomosti. At the same time, the federal leadership of the Christian Democrats continues to advocate a complete rejection of the alliance with AfD. Neither the left nor the Greens will make a deal with right-wing populists. The AfD has a chance of forming a coalition with Sahra Wagenknecht's Union, but it will most likely not be a full-fledged coalition, but a minority government with the support of Wagenknecht's party, believes Maria Khorolskaya, a research fellow at the Department of European Political Studies at the IMEMO RAS. Thus, Sahra Wagenknecht's Union will help the AfD come to power and elect a prime minister, but in the event of a vote in the Landtag, right-wing populists will be forced to turn to the union for help. Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this statement. According to him, the election result had a serious impact on his party and demonstrated the changing political situation in the country. At the same time, the head of government noted that the authorities have the tools to protect the constitutional order. Merz also acknowledged the defeat of the CDU. "The CDU lost the election dramatically," he said. European Union Max | Telegram | Newsletter | iOS App | Android]

After Sunday's election in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD could become the first far-right party to run a German state since 1945. • • But what would Ulrich Siegmund & co. do in office? I've spent the last few weeks travelling across the state, speaking to locals, politicians and experts.

What is this event about?

This market will resolve to “Yes” if the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is part of the state government (Landesregierung) of any of Germany's 16 federal states at any point between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. A party is considered part of a state government if it provides at least one Minister in that state's government, including the Minister-President. In the city-states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, a party is considered part of the state government if it provides at least one Senator, including the Governing Mayor, First Mayor or President of the Senate. A state government is considered formed when the state parliament elects the Minister-President (or, in the city-states, the Governing Mayor, First Mayor or President of the Senate) and that government has formally taken office. Coalition agreements, ministerial nominations, or announced coalition negotiations will not qualify on their own. Parties that merely support a state government (e.g., through confidence-and-supply arrangements, parliamentary support agreements, toleration agreements, or similar) without holding a Minister or Senator post will not qualify. If the AfD is not part of any German state government by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “No”. This market will resolve based on a consensus of credible reporting. In case of ambiguity, this market will resolve based on official information published by the relevant state government and state parliament.
