New @Browns HC Todd Monken wrapped up a 30 minute Zoom call with the media 30 minutes ago, one which is available at the Browns “X” account. The coach is obviously a good guy and a good coach protecting his players, especially the one getting buried online and on air. Good for him. • • But Coach Monken gets one chance to start as the new HC with the Browns. What he decides tomorrow will never be undone. If he goes with Deshaun Watson over Shadeur Sanders in tomorrow’s announcement, that never gets undone. If it is Watson, it won’t work out, and after yesterday I doubt 1 in 100 Browns fans think it could. • • So I hope any desire to try and give Watson a redemption arc doesn’t make an easy decision not only hard one but potentially disastrous one for the club, the fans and himself. • • Coach Monken referred to Deshaun Watson as a “young man.” That’s just not true. He’s 30 and has a half decade to work through his issues. He also far, far wealthier than the folks buying the tickets. He’s had a lot of chances. • • “I don’t regret anything in my life,” remains the Watson quote from yesterday that just buried the chance of getting anything going this year, and he’s not coming back to Cleveland in 2027. • • I assumed the play with him was to perhaps see if there’s an NFL QB in there, and if so, to trade him for something to a desperate contender dealing with QB injuries before the deadline 11/11 (with Browns eating the salary.) • • Hard to see how that is possible now. • • Coach Monken says he can’t think about week three and home-opener booing. Of course he can. Everyone can. I heard the boos as a kid in the old stadium for Bill Nelson gaming through on a half knee total. Same thing for Mike Phipps because the fans thought (rightly) Brian Sipe could win for them and Phipps couldn’t. You can’t make fans not boo when they collectively believe there’s a better QB on the bench. Or at least a chance at seeing one ascend and not collapse again. • • There isn’t any mystery here anymore. The “big swing and a miss” didn’t work, won’t work, and Deshaun Watson should have to try and rebuild a football career only after Coach Monken gives everybody else —fans, all players and coaches and Shadeur, Dillon and Tayler— a shot. • • I think everyone who cares gave the new coach a lot of grace to see what he needed to see, and probably would have sighed and sucked up some average play from Watson for a couple of weeks. But that 30 minutes today of dodging and weaving and the media holding back the online flood of dismay by talking about PUP etc was just the first act of a long football tragedy/comedy if he doesn’t name Sanders tomorrow. • • I want Monken to succeed. He’s obviously a very good football coach. Is he a good decision maker when lots of non-football factors are piling up? • • This isn’t a decision unique to football coaches. • • Anyone who has run anything has run into situations where you have to cut your losses and just move on. This is that. I hope Deshaun Watson turns around what is still an ongoing slide, one without apparent evidence of reflection or remorse about anything. • • But a chance at that turnaround should not come at the expense of Monken’s first impression on the fans, or at the team’s chance to start strong and looking forward, and especially not in the face of as near a unanimous opinion among fans as I can recall.
From @MaryKayCabot: A good summary of the situation in Cleveland (which has never been just a sports story and certainly is not one —again— after yesterday’s press conference by Deshaun Watson): • • Mary Kay started covering the Browns for the Cleveland Plain Dealer as a youngster and became the beat reporter in 1991 for the PD, now People may wonder what she did in her previous life to deserve this, but that’s also a question for every Browns fan. What she’s been doing for decades is top quality day-in-day-out reporting and commentary on the same club for more than 35 years. She’s a pro. She’s seen it all, respects the fans, the players, coaches and management and does her job with remarkable steadiness. So as with @terrypluto, who is an even longer tenured veteran of the Cleveland sports landscape, you can trust MKC on a complex topic like this. • • My take is that of a lifelong fan who went for decades with his season-ticket holding dad and has been a season ticket holder for 27 years, who picked up where my dad left off when the club returned to Cleveland. So I’m a hostage, a lifer. I’m not going anywhere. But the Browns are going to ask me and tens of thousands of people like me to buy “seat licenses” again in two or three years. • • My POV: I just want to watch the Browns do their best to win some games. Since 1999 the club has never won both of its first two games of the regular season. Not once. In fact the franchise has been in a hole since 1995, which was the last year in which Browns hosted a playoff game. • • So as a lifelong fan, I hope Dee and Jimmy Haslam, who are in fact good owners trying to win, let Coach Monken know that he doesn’t have to try and win a game with Watson and while it’s his decision, they know it would be better for the fans to see Shadeur Sanders open the season and go as long as he can and if he gets hurt to put in Dillon Gabriel or Taylen Green. • • It isn’t complicated. Watson is just a sunk cost for the club, lost years and opportunities for the fans. Texan Justin Reid didn’t intend to start this train wreck. But it is what it is. • • To repeat the old Irish proverb used last night: “When everybody says you’re drunk, you’d better sit down.” If there’s even one serious analyst or fan saying anything else, I missed it.

This market will resolve according to the player that is officially announced by the Cleveland Browns to be the starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2026-27 NFL regular season.
In the event that no starting quarterback is officially announced by the team, this market will resolve in favor of the listed quarterback who takes the field on the listed team’s first offensive play. In the event two listed quarterbacks take the field on the first offensive play of the Cleveland Browns’ Week 1 game, this market will resolve in favor of the player directly receiving the snap. If neither listed quarterback directly receives the snap, this market will resolve in favor of the quarterback who first directly receives a snap in the game. If a tie still persists, this market will resolve in favor of the quarterback whose listed last name comes first alphabetically.
If Week 1 of the 2026-27 NFL regular season is cancelled, postponed after September 30, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or no official starter has taken the field within that timeframe, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The resolution source for this market will be official information from the NFL and/or the Cleveland Browns; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
